I finished this a few days ago, but have been really lazy... so here I am finally writing my review for Courting Miss Lancaster. If you don't want any spoilers click here to read about it. I will try my best to not really spoil anything, but that can get hard, so if you want to be safe click on the link. Yeah, just kidding. The whole thing will be a spoiler.
Courting Miss Lancaster is about Athena Lancaster and Harry Windover. Harry is given a job from Adam, Duke of Kielder, to find Athena a suitor. Harry being completely in love with her wants her for himself, but Adam has "expressly forbade fortune hunters". Harry is pretty much destitute, so he considers himself a fortune hunter. Therefore he cannot marry the love of his life. But he must suffer as he watches her fall for someone else...someone he set her up with.
Athena has finally convinced Adam, her guardian, that she needs a Season in order to find a husband. Adam consents, but only to the Little Season. Athena agrees knowing that that is the only way she will get Adam into Town for any amount of time. Even with a Little Season she can find the love of her life... Right? They will still be going to balls, so their eyes can still meet across the dance floor, he can come and ask her to dance then sweep her off her feet. Everything can still happen!
But as the Season goes on she can only attract the weird ones that want to talk about trees, their mother, or themselves. And Harry is the one that keeps introducing them to her. He has strange friends.
Harry is introducing Athena to men that will help him to find the perfect gentleman for her. Her only requirements were that he be eligible and a gentleman. She can’t have only those requirements, that could be any man. So he introduces gentleman who will add things to her list. But then Mr. Dalforth wished to be introduced to Athena. They seemed to hit it off instantly. Athena really likes this Gentleman. He is the best one she’s been introduced to so far this season… and Harry didn’t introduce them. He even seems to not like the gentleman. But that can’t be right. Harry likes everyone. If he can be friends with the infamous Duke of Kielder then he can be friends with anyone.
Harry, in fact, doesn’t like Mr. Dalforth. He seems to have captured Athena’s heart. He may be playing matchmaker, but he can’t seem to get her out of his heart. As Harry continues to introduce Athena to different weird men Dalforth seems to catch on to what Harry is doing. He doesn’t know why, but he knows what’s going down.
Dalforth confronts Harry about it one day. An argument ensues and Athena walks in. She is devastated at the news that her best friend has been setting her up with these strange men on purpose. How dare he!? She tells him that she trusted him, but now they can’t be friends. Because friends don’t do what he did to each other.
Harry leaves Kielder House and goes to visit his sister. He can’t be around Athena with her angry at him. So basically he ran away from London because of a girl. (That would be funny if you’ve read the book.)
Athena finds herself weepy after finding out about Harry’s betrayal. His sudden departure hadn’t helped either. Persephone confronts her about everything. Persephone tells Athena that you might be the last to know that you are in love. Athena doesn’t understand so Persephone tells about how she fell for Adam. She tells Athena to search her heart. That she might just find that it’s already been taken. Of course she finds Harry is the one she is in love with, but how can that be when he betrayed her? How can she love someone who so obviously doesn’t love her?
Harry receives a letter from Persephone begging him to come back and help her with Adam’s bad mood. He goes and Persephone tells Adam that Harry is in love with Athena. There is a tender conversation between the two best friends. It really is sweet. Then Persephone declares that Harry is going to make their next ball magical.
And he does. Happy ending!
Alright, this story is absolutely adorable. I just can’t handle it. My favorite scene is one I skipped over in the summary. They are at the theater and Harry “holds her hand”. AHHHHH! I love it so much. So cute. I love how Harry has to play matchmaker. It lends the story a touch of irony that I enjoy. I loved seeing more of Harry and Adam’s friendship. I love how it’s a best friends falling for each other story. I am a huge sucker for that. They are my favorite. I will give this book 5 quills, because it was adorable. I have never been disappointed from a Sarah M. Eden book and am glad that this one wasn’t the first.
Now to finish up The Freedom Factor by Gerald Lund!
