The widowed Elise is a perfect English lady living within the confines of society for the sake of her impressionable young son. Her quiet world is shattered when she meets the impulsive and scandalous Jared Amesbury. His roguish charm awakens her yearning for adventure. But his irrepressible grin and sea-green eyes hide a secret.
A gentleman by day, a pirate by night, Jared accepts one last assignment before he can be truly free. Elise gives him hope that he, too, can find love and belonging. His hopes are crushed when his best laid plans go awry and Elise is dragged into his world of violence and deceit. She may not survive the revelation of Jared's past...or still love him when the truth is revealed.
This book was way good! Not only did Cole and Alicia make an appearance, but Jared is a "PIRATE KING". Please tell me you got my reference. I'll grieve for 5 years and a little bit over. But I guess it really doesn’t matter. (I really think I'm funny, but if you didn't get any of those references it’s from the Pirates of Penzance. Look it up I promise you won't regret it.) Anyway I was a big fan of the whole pirate thing.
For some very strange reason this book reminded me quite a bit of As You Are by Sarah M. Eden. I think it was that Elise and Clara are rather a lot alike. Or it could be the little kid thing. I know its not that Jared and Corbin are alike, because they can’t be more different.
I loved the ending. I know you who have read this book are probably thinking “is this girl nutso? How could she possible like that ending?” Here’s how. **This is where I spoil the ending so if you don’t want to read my spoiler than here is your warning. Move to the next paragraph or something. ** It’s not very often that you read a book where the main character gets hanged for treason to the queen. That, in its self, sets the book apart and makes it interesting. And the fact that it tears your heart out, rips it up, and blows it in your face only to try to repair it for you makes it a memorable book that will stick with you. It was also a great set up for Grants book… is that the next one? I know there are four right now, but I can’t remember the order… Let me check…
Anyway, I am going to give this book 5 quills. I was really connected to this book. I wasn’t as good as The Stranger She Married, but it was still really good. And I love books that follow a family. It’s a good think I like Romance novels so much because they do that a lot.
Now that I’ve checked which book comes next I am going to read A Perfect Secret by Donna Hatch!
